This charming community at the foot of the
Ruby Mountains is a refreshing mix of family farms and country lanes not too far from
Elko in northeastern Nevada. You can stay at
The Pine Lodge, a long-time dinner house and hotel. If you can’t cozy up for the night, you’ll want to at least check out the display of game animals in the dining room—mounted moose heads are the highlight of the museum-quality dioramas.
With the establishment of
Ruby Mountain Heli-Ski and the inviting
Reds Ranch accepting guests, winters are active even in remote Lamoille. Each morning after daybreak, helicopters detach themselves from a cow pasture near the entrance to Reds Ranch and embark to the summits of the Ruby Mountains, where they pause to drop skiers and their guides on the powdery snow. Nevada with Altitude, as they say in Elko.
Scenic Lamoille Canyon Road is one of Nevada’s jewels, and that’s saying a lot for a state filled with beautiful byways. The road leads to a plethora of summer activities, including camping, picnicking, fishing, strolling or serious hiking in the pines. You also can access the trailhead for the 33-mile
Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail.
